KIT SCIENCE WEEK - Final Concert

PROGRAM

- Greeting by the KIT Presidium

- Nielsen: Helios Overture

- Brahms: Double Concerto

- Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

Soloists: Axel Haase (violin), Andreas Schmalhofer (violoncello)

Conductor: Tobias Drewelius

At the end of the KIT Science Week 2023, the KIT Symphony Orchestra will give a concert at the Konzerthaus Karlsruhe.

Enjoy the morning silence and darkness in the Helios Overture by Nielsen and the then cheerfully rising sun in Athens.

Then experience the sound of the instruments of the Guarneri family: Axel Haase plays a violin by Pietro Guarneri, built in Mantua in 1689, Andreas Schmalhofer a cello from 1725, built by his nephew Pietro Guerneri in Venice. In Brahms' Double Concerto, composed in 1887 and his last orchestral work, both instruments (in his own words, a single "giant violin") sound not next to each other but with each other, sometimes the violin, sometimes the cello taking over the melodic bow, sometimes accompanying each other and ensuring a constant flow.

After the interval, experience the contemplative and warm power, the austere colouring, the closeness to nature, but also the serious pathos of Sibelius' 2nd Symphony, influenced by the Don Juan legend, as well as the seclusion, but also the personal situation during Sibelius' stay in Italy.
More than 100 students and professionals from a wide range of disciplines make music in the KIT Symphony Orchestra. In the concerts at the end of each semester, you will hear works from the classical, romantic and modern periods; often in collaboration with internationally renowned soloists or with promising young artists from the Karlsruhe region. The symphony orchestra is a prizewinner of the German Orchestra Competition.Audio and video recordings will be made of the event. By attending, you agree to their publication as part of the orchestra's public relations work.
